Bitcoin 'Anti-Spam' Fork Sputters to a Halt After Mining Just Two Blocks

The long-simmering fight over a controversial Bitcoin network proposal finally produced a chain split over the weekend, but the breakaway Bitcoin fork sputtered almost immediately, grinding out just two blocks in roughly eight hours before stalling out.

The fork came as a result of a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal known as BIP-110, whose supporters claimed would protect the network from unwanted spam and the legal liability that comes from hosting non-financial data on the network. Its detractors, the majority of the Bitcoin community, viewed it as an attempt at censorship.

The fork triggered Saturday at block 961,632, when Bitcoin nodes running BIP-110 software began rejecting any block that failed to signal support for the proposal. A block mined by AntPool without that signal was accepted by the main network and rejected by BIP-110 nodes, while a miner on the Ocean pool produced the alternative the minority chain followed.

Hours later, the splinter chain sat far behind, trailing the main network by dozens of blocks as Bitcoin kept churning out one roughly every ten minutes.

The stall stems from a problem the fork can't easily escape. Bitcoin only recalibrates its mining difficulty every 2,016 blocks, and the breakaway chain inherited the network's current setting while commanding a sliver of its computing power—about 2.53% of recent blocks signaled for the proposal, far short of the 55% needed to activate without splitting. At that pace, the chain would need roughly 350 days to reach its next difficulty adjustment, versus about two weeks for Bitcoin, leaving blocks hours apart.

BIP-110, as Decrypt has previously reported, is a soft-fork proposal to temporarily bar people from stuffing images, text, and other non-financial data into Bitcoin transactions. Backers argue the practice, popularized by Ordinals inscriptions, clogs the network and drives up fees for ordinary payments.

Opponents counter that anyone paying for block space has earned the right to use it as they see fit, and that letting miners and node operators police transactions erodes Bitcoin's censorship resistance. Strategy's Michael Saylor has been among the critics, warning that turning a spam dispute into a consensus change sets a dangerous precedent.

On early Sunday morning, Saylor posted on X: “Bitcoin worked exactly as designed. BIP-110 was free to fork, and the network was free not to follow. Jameson Lopp, a long-time Bitcoin advocate and the co-founder of Bitcoin security company Casa, echoed the sentiment and took it a step further: I won't be ‘welcoming back’ or unblocking any BIP-110 supporters,” he posted on X. “They proved themselves to be susceptible to delusional propaganda from folks emanating reality distortion fields. In many cases they spewed vitriol and harassed the very people who have devoted their lives to supporting and improving Bitcoin.”

There's a further catch for anyone holding the fork's coins: because both chains accept identical transactions, a sale on the minority chain can be replayed on Bitcoin, potentially handing a buyer real BTC from the same seller. The mandatory signaling window closes at block 963,647—a mark the chain won't come close to reaching.

Bitcoin Red Team Says AI Is Finding Critical Exploits Across Core Projects

A volunteer security initiative says it used frontier AI models to scan 150 Bitcoin repositories and found more than a dozen vulnerabilities as developers increasingly use artificial intelligence to audit blockchains.

In a post on X earlier this week, AnchorWatch CEO Rob Hamilton said the group has spent about $20,000 on AI services while building a "Bitcoin red team" platform.

“We have been working around the clock, with ~$20,000 of spend up to this point across different services,” he wrote. “Funding is secured, I appreciate all the gestures for donations but it is not necessary. The bill is taken care of.”

A red team refers to cybersecurity professionals who test software from an attacker's perspective, probing for vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.

According to Hamilton, the Bitcoin red team uses Kimi K3 alongside OpenAI’s GPT Sol, Anthropic’s Claude Fable and Opus models, and Z.ai’s GLM 5.2 to identify vulnerabilities and generate supporting documentation.

“We also have been connected with OpenAI for some help so I could manage getting the Cyber Harness running as well,” he wrote. “It's a much more expensive scan, but well worth it for load-bearing portions of the Bitcoin ecosystem and has already yielded good results.”

Pseudonymous Bitcoin developer Calle said the initiative has built multiple AI-powered review systems targeting wallets, cryptographic libraries, infrastructure, and other Bitcoin projects.

"We're averaging on the order of one critical exploit per hour per person,” Calle wrote on X. “We've reported critical vulnerabilities to several projects in the last 12 hours. Thankfully, this is a very expensive exercise. We're burning through $10,000 per day."

The team did not disclose which projects were affected or provide details of the vulnerabilities.

The announcement comes as AI is playing a growing role in finding security flaws across the crypto industry. Earlier this year, researchers using Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 uncovered a four-year-old flaw in Zcash that could have allowed attackers to create unlimited counterfeit ZEC. In August, Coinkite said it believes attackers used AI to identify the Coldcard wallet vulnerability, while Bitcoin bridge Boltz suspended its swap service after saying attackers were using AI to identify vulnerabilities faster than its team could patch them.

Senate Keeps Clarity Act Alive With Crypto Bill Vote Set for September

The U.S. Senate has taken its first formal step toward voting on the Clarity Act, with leadership moving early Saturday to tee up a vote on the crypto market-structure bill and lock in a September date.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune filed the motion to proceed on the bill, opening the multi-step cloture process the chamber uses to push contested legislation past its 60-vote threshold. The filing came too late to squeeze in a vote before senators leave for their August recess, but it queues up an initial procedural vote almost immediately after they return, with the first test set for 2:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 15.

The cloture filing on the motion to proceed to H.R. 3633 is a procedural first step, not passage, but it signals that Republican leadership intends to make the bill an early priority when the Senate reconvenes.

The Clarity Act, if passed into law, would provide a formal legal structure for most cryptocurrency activity in the United States, drawing jurisdictional lines between the SEC and CFTC, and placing much of the industry under the purview of the latter. It is widely believed that the bill would provide the crypto market with a much-needed boost, giving traditional financial institutions further confidence to dive in.

Today’s move from the Senate follows Thune's decision this week to push the vote past the break rather than force it before lawmakers left town, a delay that was driven by Democratic reluctance to advance the bill. Republicans still need roughly six Democratic crossovers to reach the 60-vote threshold, a gap that has not closed since the measure cleared the Senate Banking Committee in May with only two Democrats in support.

Now negotiators have several weeks to resolve the disputes still dogging it: the details of its illicit-finance and law-enforcement protections, the unresolved fight over stablecoin yield and rewards, and the government-ethics provisions covering President Donald Trump's crypto holdings.

Lawmakers are still trying to secure a bipartisan agreement on provisions governing President Trump's crypto holdings, an addendum negotiated with the White House that would require him to divest from crypto-related businesses. As of yet, there was still no word from the White House on the proposed addendum.

Should the bill clear the Senate, it would return to the House for another vote before reaching Trump's desk. With the September window closing quickly ahead of midterm campaigning, the coming weeks are widely seen as the last realistic chance for the legislation to become law this year.

That’s essentially the meaning behind Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev’s “two wolves” post on X, which the company’s head of crypto, Johann Kerbrat, says sums up what Robinhood is going for with the launch of its own Ethereum layer-2 network: a balance between serious products—tokenized equities and derivatives contracts—and the memes that bring in attention, fun, and users.

And it’s off to a roaring start.

In just over a month online, Robinhood Chain has reached nearly $800 million in total value locked and has since processed more than 200 million transactions, Kerbrat said.

In an exclusive interview with FOMO Hour on Friday, Kerbrat, who leads Robinhood’s crypto and international businesses, said the company chose an Ethereum layer-2 over a layer-1 blockchain so it could rely on existing security and decentralization while focusing its resources on products.

He pointed to the chain’s deposits and transaction count as early measures of its adoption.

“We also look a lot at developer activity, that’s something that is very important for me,” he said. “I want the chain to not just be the chain for Robinhood, but also be the chain that anyone can use and interact with our product, like our stock tokens, but also everything else that we are building.”

The Robinhood Chain network is part of Robinhood’s effort to move brokerage products on-chain. Customers can use it to buy and sell real-world assets, roughly 200 tokenized stocks, lend stablecoins, and trade perpetual futures.

Kerbrat said the freedom to trade when traditional markets are closed gives retail investors a way to respond to market-moving news after traditional exchanges close.

“The world doesn't stop on weekends,” he said. “News is happening on Fridays after market close, and people want to be able to hedge their position, which was something that was not really available to retail until recently.”

Alongside tokenized stocks, lending, and other financial products, Kerbrat said Robinhood is making room for meme coins, which he described as an important source of liquidity and user interest for the new network.

“We think memes are an important part of crypto. We think that for a new chain, like Robinhood Chain, these tokens have value. They bring liquidity, they bring interest from customers, especially the DeFi-type of customer that are pretty hard to move,” said Kerbrat.

“If meme coins are something that they are extremely interested in, we want to make sure that the chain is supported for that,” he said.

Ultimately, Kerbrat said Robinhood wants to reach people who have never used crypto rather than compete with rival blockchains for existing users.

“If we see tens of millions of customers trying to use a chain, I think that will be a good win for us,” he said. “We want to bring more customers on-chain and show them the benefit of the technology.”

Trump Media Abandons Crypto Treasury, Prediction Market Ventures

President Donald Trump’s Trump Media & Technology Group has scrapped plans to launch a Crypto.com-backed CRO treasury company and abandoned a broader digital asset deal with the company.

According to a report by Axios, Trump Media, Crypto.com, and special purpose acquisition company Yorkville Acquisition Corp. have mutually agreed to terminate the proposed Trump Media Group CRO Strategy, a previously announced services agreement, and related digital asset products.

The companies cited "prevailing market conditions" and "shifting business and stakeholder priorities" for the decision.

The venture would have licensed the Trump Media name for a company built around Crypto.com's Cronos blockchain and the Cronos token, which trades as CRO. When announced last year, the partners said it would become the first and largest publicly traded CRO treasury company by accumulating the token and generating additional returns from those holdings. The CRO token currently trades for $0.05, falling sharply following the news, at around a $2.4 billion market capitalization.

Interim CEO Kevin McGurn told Axios the company is narrowing its focus after the market for digital asset treasury companies became increasingly crowded over the past year. He added that staking has become less important to Crypto.com, making it the right time for the companies to go their separate ways.

The Truth Social parent company is also abandoning plans to integrate prediction markets directly into Truth Social. Instead, the companies will pursue a marketing deal that promotes Crypto.com's prediction market products to Truth Social users.

McGurn said the prediction market business has become crowded, making it a less compelling area for investment. Rather than operating prediction markets itself, Trump Media now sees greater value in acting as a distribution and data partner.

Trump Media’s relationship with Crypto.com had expanded over the past year.

In October 2025, Trump Media announced plans to launch Truth Predict, a Crypto.com-powered prediction market integrated with Truth Social. In December, the companies unveiled plans for a publicly traded CRO treasury company with Yorkville Acquisition Corp., which was expected to hold billions of CRO tokens. In February, Crypto.com disclosed donating $35 million over the previous year to the pro-Trump super PAC MAGA Inc. The same month, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency conditionally approved the exchange's application for a national trust bank charter.

Democrats have repeatedly criticized Trump's expanding crypto ventures.

Earlier this week, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) urged the SEC to investigate President Donald Trump's meme coin, arguing the agency should determine whether it facilitated fraud or unjust enrichment. The request is the latest sign of growing Democratic scrutiny of Trump’s business dealings, specifically in crypto, ahead of November's midterm elections.

Treasury Sanctions Crypto Exchanges It Says Laundered Millions for Iran

The U.S. Treasury just sanctioned two crypto exchanges it says laundered millions for Iran's Revolutionary Guard—naming one operator who ran the scheme from Georgia and the UAE, and a second platform based in Iran.

OFAC announced the action on August 7 under its "Economic Fury" campaign. "The Iranian regime's reliance on digital assets and shadow banking networks is further evidence that Economic Fury is working," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. A separate, simultaneous action went after Iran's traditional shadow-banking network.

The centerpiece is Siavash Kayvanpour. He's Iran-born, holds Dominica and Afghanistan citizenship, and ran a multi-country network from the UAE and Georgia. Through his Georgia firm SHPS Shelbit, he operated Shelbit Exchange.

Treasury says Iranian armed forces-linked wallets sent over $1 million in crypto to Shelbit, and Shelbit sent more than $2 million back to Iranian wallets—plus another $2 million to Nobitex, an Iranian exchange that was already sanctioned for terrorist financing.

Shelbit also laundered tens of millions from a Persian-language online gambling network, Treasury alleges.

The UAE's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) took enforcement action against Shelbit General Trading in January 2025 and again in July 2026, but the exchange remained in business, Treasury said. Kayvanpour also ran Poland-based Shelbit Technologies and UAE-based Crypto Home and NFT Home DMCC, all designated alongside Shelbit.

The second exchange, Aban Tether, processed millions in transactions with previously designated Iranian platforms including Nobitex, Wallex, Bitpin, and Ramzinex. Both were designated under authorities targeting Iran's financial sector and its support for terrorism.

The designations add the entities to the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) List—the U.S. government's blocklist of people and firms cut off from the American financial system. Any U.S.-touching property is frozen, and foreign firms that keep dealing with them risk secondary sanctions.

The State Department's Rewards for Justice program is offering up to $15 million for information that disrupts the financial mechanisms of the IRGC, Iran’s military. The crypto seizures are part of a sustained push against Iran’s reliance on crypto: Just in May, the U.S. froze $131 million in Iran-linked crypto and, per Bessent, seized roughly $1 billion in Iranian crypto since the campaign began.

As of August 7, Shelbit Exchange, Aban Tether, and the named individuals are on the SDN List, their U.S.-touching assets blocked.

Bitcoin Payment Service BTCPay Warns Critical Flaw Is Under Active Attack

BTCPay Server warned users Friday that attackers are exploiting a critical vulnerability that could lead to stolen funds.

In a post on X on Friday, the Bitcoin payment processor urged administrators to install version 2.4.2 and confirm the update in the server footer.

“If you are unable to update right away, turn off your BTCPay Server to prevent unauthorized access until you can update,” the company wrote.

BTCPay Server also told users to replace credentials known as macaroons and recreate the macaroons.db file and refresh authentication strings for other Lightning Network backends.

“If you generated a hot on-chain wallet in BTCPay, you want to move those funds and recreate the wallet,” they added.

The project credited Bitcoin Red Team members with reporting the vulnerability.

BTCPay Server has not disclosed how the flaw works, when the attacks began, how many servers were compromised, or whether any funds were actually stolen.

While BTCPay Server did not disclose whether AI played a part, the news comes as AI is increasingly finding flaws in crypto projects.

In May, security researcher Taylor Hornby used Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 to find a four-year-old Zcash vulnerability that could have allowed attackers to create unlimited counterfeit ZEC.

In August, Coldcard maker Coinkite said it suspected attackers used AI to find a firmware flaw linked to more than $100 million in stolen Bitcoin.

More recently, on Tuesday, Bitcoin swap provider Boltz suspended its service after several exploits, saying AI-assisted attacks were finding vulnerabilities faster than its team could fix them.

BTCPay Server did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Decrypt.

Flock Wanted to Turn 350,000 Uber Drivers Into a Nationwide Plate-Scanning Fleet

The controversial law enforcement vendor Flock Safety wanted to make every Uber, Lyft, and delivery car a moving license-plate reader.

A presentation the company wrote for the Georgia Attorney General's office, and later shared with 404 Media, lays out a plan to use dashcams from Nexar—a company whose cameras already sit in hundreds of thousands of vehicles—to scan the plates of cars those drivers passed.

Flock said it never actually launched the Nexar deal. The document still shows how far the company wanted to stretch its reach.

Flock's normal product is a fixed camera on a pole that logs the plate, color, make, and model of every car that drives past, building a searchable map of where vehicles go. They’ve become incredibly divisive in communities where they’ve gone up, with people taking to knocking them down or covering them up in protest.

The Nexar idea would have untethered these cameras from the pole. Instead of one camera watching one intersection, 350,000 cars would have carried the camera with them, filling gaps between fixed sites and tracking plates across whole regions in real time.

Axon sells a similar roaming version for police cruisers; Motorola's DRN and Vigilant do it through repossession agents' cars. Flock's pitch was to do it at civilian scale.

Flock hit an $8.4 billion valuation in April and its stationary cameras now cover more than 5,000 U.S. communities. Yet the ground is shifting under that network. In July, the LAPD let its Flock contract expire, citing "serious concerns" over civil liberties and privacy.

CNN documented at least two dozen cases in which officers resigned or were arrested for allegedly abusing Flock's license-plate system. A presentation pitching a 350,000-car expansion landed right as the company's existing footprint drew fire.

The backlash isn't just local. The non-profit advocacy group EPIC urged Congress in May to ban automatic license-plate readers outright, and states are moving on their own: Washington passed SB 6002 restricting ALPR (Automated License Plate Recognition) use, and California is weighing a bill to limit how the data is shared. Decrypt also previously reported on a proposed House bill that would require warrants for government AI surveillance.

Also, the implementation of Flock’s cameras on Federal buildings drew a heavy opposition arguing it may violate civil rights.

The legal front is active too: A federal judge let a Norfolk suit alleging Flock cameras violate the Fourth Amendment proceed, citing the Supreme Court's Carpenter v. United States ruling on warrantless tracking.

XRP at a Crossroads as Senate Punts on Clarity Act

The Senate left town without taking up the Clarity Act, pushing the market-structure vote to at least September. Every major coin shrugged it off—except XRP.

While Bitcoin stayed flat, dealing with its own headwinds, and Dogecoin gained 1.38% over the day to be the best performer in the top 10 crypto assets by market cap, XRP dropped 2.05%, the only major token to close red.

On a week that saw it fall 3%, it's the weakest of the majors by a wide margin.

The delay isn't just procedural for XRP. The token's entire 2025–2026 rally thesis rested on the U.S. finally deciding what XRP is. The Clarity Act would sort crypto into securities and commodities and, in drafts Decrypt previously reported, would reclassify XRP, Solana, and Dogecoin as non-securities.

That means these coins would fall under the regulatory purview of the CFTC, widely viewed as the more preferable option by crypto industry observers, rather than the historically tougher SEC.

For Ripple, whose co-founder created the XRP cryptocurrency, that's the prize years of litigation were about: a federal answer to the SEC's long fight over whether XRP was an unregistered security. Ripple agreed to pay $50 million to settle its cross-appeal with the SEC, but a statute beats a settlement.

A law settles the question for every exchange, custodian, and regulator at once. Without it, XRP stays in legal limbo—and limbo is what the chart appears to be pricing.

XRP price: What the charts say

XRP is trading at $1.028, roughly a $64 billion market cap, down 0.71% on the day, after a red candle that has kept it pinned just above the $1.00 psychological floor. It's the second-lowest print on the daily chart since early 2024, above only the $0.9153 low marked last month.

The trajectory is a clean, grinding downtrend. XRP has been in a strong bearish trend since 2025, when it reached $3 per coin. The 50-day EMA (the average price over the last 50 sessions) has crossed below the 200-day EMA (the average over the last 200 sessions) in a formation known as a death cross. XRP’s current price is below both lines, so there's no average acting as support beneath it.

The Relative Strength Index, or RSI, reads 35.9. RSI is a momentum gauge on a 0–100 scale: above 70 is overbought, below 30 is oversold. At 35.9, momentum is bearish with room for more downside before buyers typically step in.

The Average Directional Index, or ADX, reads 11.9. ADX measures trend strength, not direction: below 20 means the move lacks conviction and chop is common. However, the Squeeze Momentum indicator is still off, meaning volatility is expanding rather than coiling.

No compression means no loaded spring waiting to fire; moves here tend to be slow.

A bull case would appear if a daily close back above $1.10 (the lower Fib zone and first real resistance) and then the $1.13 point of control signal the floor is holding. An advance in the Clarity Act, though not until September at the earliest now, could also ignite some bullish appetite among traders.

Bear case: a break under $1.00 opens the path to $0.9153, the chart's lowest mark since 2024. A daily close there confirms the downtrend and erases the post-2024 recovery. The current trend is bearish, so this is a very likely scenario.

On Myriad, a prediction market developed by Decrypt’s parent company Dastan, traders are currently optimistic on XRP’s short-term outlook. Traders are pricing in 77% odds that XRP stays above $1.00, at least over the weekend.

For now, $1.00 is the line. Above it, XRP is cheap and oversold; below it, the chart says the slide isn't done.

Hackers Use BNB Chain to Spread Malware Through Fake CAPTCHAs

Hackers are using BNB Chain contracts to spread malware through compromised websites and fake CAPTCHA prompts, according to a report by Microsoft Threat Intelligence.

In a post on X on Thursday, Microsoft Threat Intelligence said the campaign uses EtherHiding, a technique that stores malicious instructions in a blockchain smart contract. JavaScript injected into compromised websites contacts a BNB Chain gateway and retrieves commands from a contract previously linked to ClearFake, a malware campaign that infects legitimate websites.

Storing the instructions on a blockchain network makes them harder to remove. Only the wallet controlling the contract can change its contents, limiting the effectiveness of conventional takedowns.

Visitors to compromised websites see a fake CAPTCHA telling them to open the Windows Run dialog, paste text from their clipboard, and press Enter. Doing so runs a command supplied by the attacker.

The method, known as ClickFix, depends on victims executing the malware themselves. A variation called TerminalFix directs users to Windows Terminal or PowerShell.

“This campaign demonstrates that ClickFix and TerminalFix are a high-volume initial access technique,” Microsoft researchers wrote. “Microsoft reports campaigns targeting thousands of enterprise and consumer devices globally every day, while some malvertising chains can funnel visitors to scam pages.”

According to Microsoft, hackers hide their commands and abuse legitimate Windows tools, including PowerShell, cmd, mshta, rundll32, msiexec, curl, Windows Management Instrumentation, and scheduled tasks. A successful infection can expose passwords, establish lasting access, help hackers move through a network, and lead to ransomware or broader network compromise.

The use of blockchains to support malware attacks is not new.

In 2016, Cerber ransomware began using Bitcoin transactions to find its command-and-control servers. From 2019 to 2021, the Glupteba botnet used the Bitcoin blockchain to locate backup servers when its main ones went offline.

In September 2023, the ClearFake malware campaign began using EtherHiding to retrieve malicious code from BNB Chain smart contracts. In April 2026, researchers found Omnistealer using TRON, Aptos, and BNB Chain to help steal credentials, cloud account information, passwords, and crypto wallet data.

In other words, the problem is not unique to BNB Chain. But it’s notable that Microsoft’s threat team has chosen to highlight what appears to be an ongoing issue.

The news comes after BNB Chain unveiled plans in July for a new layer-1 blockchain built for high-frequency trading, automated payments, and AI-driven transactions. A testnet is expected by the end of 2026, followed by a mainnet launch in early 2027.

Microsoft advised organizations to restrict unnecessary command-line tools, enable PowerShell logging, and use application controls.

“Users should never paste commands from CAPTCHAs, browser errors, emails, ads, or unsolicited support pages into Run, Terminal, PowerShell, or Command prompt,” Microsoft said.

Bitcoin Still in Death Cross as Jobs Miss Cuts Rate-Hike Odds

The U.S. labor market cracked harder than anyone expected. Employers cut 23,000 jobs in July—the first net loss since the pandemic-era recovery, and a sharp miss against the 95,000 gain economists had penciled in.

The unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1% only because more people quit the labor force entirely. June's gain was revised to 20,000 from 57,000, and May was nearly halved.

Markets read it as a reason for the Federal Reserve to keep its hands off rates. Treasury yields fell, the dollar dropped 0.5%, and CME FedWatch showed the odds of a September rate hike sliding to 40% from 55% a day earlier.

A softer Fed path is usually a tailwind for risk assets and crypto—but Bitcoin's chart shows a market that hasn't reclaimed its trend.

Bitcoin price: What the charts say

Bitcoin is trading at $64,938, up 1.06% (+$683) on the session, after a green candle closed near its high. It's compressing below its two key moving averages.

The trajectory tells the story. BTC topped near $80,000 in mid-May, then slid to a July low around $58,000 in a clean downtrend through the spring. The 50-day EMA (the average price over the last 50 sessions) is below the 200-day EMA (the average over the last 200 sessions) in formation traders call a death cross. When the shorter average sits under the longer one, the medium-term trajectory still points down. Since the July low, the fall has flattened into a sideways coil, but price has not pushed back above either average.

The Relative Strength Index, or RSI, reads 54.6. RSI is a momentum gauge on a 0–100 scale: above 70 is overbought, below 30 is oversold. At 54.6, momentum is neutral—no fuel for a breakout, no washout either.

The bull case, considering the technicals, would form if a daily close back above the 50-day EMA and the $66,000 whole-number resistance opens a run at the 200-day EMA ($64,00) and the cloud top near $72,000. More into the fundamentals, a softer Fed and a weak dollar give that push a reason to fire. The bull case exists, but it's thin: Bitcoin’s price has failed to reclaim the 50-day line through the whole coil.

Bear case: a break below $60,000 (the cloud floor and a round-number magnet) confirms the bears still own the structure and points back to the July low of $58,000. A daily close under that reopens the spring downtrend.

On Myriad, a prediction market developed by Decrypt's parent company Dastan, the outlook for Bitcoin remains bearish. Traders are currently pricing in nearly 65% odds that Bitcoin heads back down to $55K before mounting any recovery towards $84K. And those have barely moved over the last week.

For now, $65K is the line in the sand. Above the 50-day EMA, the July chop looks like base-building; below $60K, it looks like a bear flag.

The jobs report gave Bitcoin the macro cover to rally, but the death cross says it hasn't earned it yet.

OpenAI's First Device Is a $300-Plus Doughnut-Shaped Speaker: Report

OpenAI's first consumer device will be a screenless smart speaker shaped like a doughnut and roughly the size of a hockey puck, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the work who asked not to be identified because it is confidential.

The battery-powered product is meant to be carried around the home in one hand and to work in different positions, whether held or set down on a surface. It will carry speaker grilles and microphones for conversation, lights to signal when it is listening, and a camera and sensors that feed information about the surroundings back to the AI.

Parts of the circular casing will move on their own to show when the device is responding, an effort to make the object feel more alive than competing stationary smart speakers where Amazon and Google dominate the market. OpenAI is positioning it as a computer built around AI, and expects people to lean on it through the day, working much like ChatGPT's voice mode with more advanced models behind it.

Pricing has been discussed at $300 to $400 per unit, above most smart speakers and below a standard iPhone. The hardware was designed with Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio and will use upscale materials including high-quality metal. OpenAI bought Ive's device startup io for $6.4 billion in May 2025, and Decrypt reported in April that it is separately co-developing a smartphone chip with Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Apple's lawsuit

The news comes after Ive's former employer sued OpenAI in July in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California over the alleged misappropriation of hardware trade secrets, naming former engineer Chang Liu, former design executive Tang Yew Tan and io Products. Apple's complaint cites a metal finishing technique it says OpenAI asked a longtime Apple supplier to develop for an upcoming product, though whether that refers to the speaker, a different device or a scrapped concept is unclear, according to Bloomberg.

OpenAI denies it. In a blog post on Monday, the company called the suit "careless, aggressive and oddly personal," said Apple had confused two employees with similar surnames, and published emails and texts it says undercut the claims. It filed a motion to dismiss late Wednesday.

Apple has also asked for a preliminary injunction that could restrict OpenAI while the case proceeds, and which could complicate the launch. OpenAI has aimed to unveil the speaker this year and ship it in 2027, and is pressing ahead internally. A representative declined to comment on its product plans to Bloomberg.

OpenAI’s pitch for AI in the home has met with resistance online. Altman tweeted last week that a "cool use case" for its ChatGPT Work agent was connecting family calendars to generate a school-run podcast about one child's soccer game and another's birthday. Several critical replies drew more likes than the post itself, Fortune reported, objecting to software standing in for family conversation.

Bitcoin Wallet Dormant Since 2011 Moves Millions in BTC

Another dormant Bitcoin whale has awoken.

An old Bitcoin address holding millions in Bitcoin that had not made any transactions in over 14 years suddenly reactivated yesterday. Per Galaxy Research's monitoring, the Bitcoin address beginning in “1EBz” first took in the Bitcoin on July 16, 2011, when BTC traded under $15. It sat untouched until 20:14 UTC on August 6, 2026, when a single transaction swept the balance to a fresh address.

At roughly $10 per coin, the 49.97 BTC cost about $500 to acquire in mid-2011. Priced near $65,000 today, the position is worth $3.23 million—a 634,347% gain. That return profile is specific to Bitcoin's earliest years, when the asset was a thinly traded experiment rather than a $1.3 trillion market. Few holders kept the funds, or the keys, that long.

The destination wallet then sent funds to a FalconX-labeled wallet, according to data from Arkham Intelligence. FalconX is a prime broker that serves trading firms and institutions, not a retail exchange. The link does not confirm a sale, but it does raise the possibility that whoever controls the coins is consolidating them or staging a move closer to a venue where they could be sold or used as collateral.

This isn't a one-off. Old coins waking up is a recurring theme in Bitcoin, and make waves almost every time a movement like this happens.

A Satoshi-era Bitcoin whale moved $11 million after 12 years asleep back in 2023, and another "ancient" stash changed wallets after 12 years dormant. Back in 2024, nearly 50,000 BTC worth $2 billion shifted after sitting since 2013, with analysts blaming an exchange or custodian rebalancing rather than one lucky early adopter. Bitcoin whales woke up repeatedly in 2025 and moved billions.

In most of those cases the destination pointed to professional infrastructure, not a private holder suddenly cashing out.

The metric watchers use here is "Coin Days Destroyed," also called Satoshi Days. Every day a coin stays unmoved, it accrues one "day" of age. When it finally moves, those accumulated days are destroyed at once, so a single transfer from a 2011 wallet erases more than 5,400 days per coin—a large score that signals an old balance changing hands.

A big print can mean an early adopter is taking profit, or simply relocating coins for security or custody. The number shows the movement happened; it does not say why, which is why some traders take that into consideration, expecting a price dump if the hodler realizes their profit.

The BTC remains in the receiving address as of Friday.

Tokenized Asset Deposits Tripled to $7.4B as DeFi Shrank: CoinShares

Deposits of tokenized real-world assets into decentralized lending platforms and exchanges more than tripled over the past year, climbing from $2.3 billion to $7.4 billion, while total deposits across DeFi fell by approximately 15%.

The figures come from The Growth of Hybrid Finance, published Thursday by asset manager CoinShares and on-chain data provider Token Terminal. It is the pair's second joint report, covering the second quarter of 2025 through the second quarter of 2026, with all data supplied by Token Terminal.

The same divergence runs through three markets. Aggregate spot volumes on decentralized exchanges declined by around 70% over the period, while volumes in tokenized real-world assets rose by roughly 220%. On perpetual futures venues, both trading volumes and open interest in RWAs kept climbing through a broader slowdown that began in October 2025, and RWA positions now make up more than a quarter of on-chain perpetuals open interest.

Tokenized Treasury and multi-strategy funds including JTRSY, BUIDL and sUSDS account for the largest share, followed by private credit products such as JAAA, syrupUSDC and PRIME, and delta-neutral strategies like sUSDe. Tokenized gold leads spot trading volume. Perpetuals activity concentrates in oil and precious metals, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100, and technology and semiconductor stocks.

"Investors are not leaving traditional finance behind," CoinShares co-founder and CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti argued in a statement. "Look at what is actually being used on-chain," he added. "Treasuries, gold, the S&P 500, semiconductor stocks. Not one of them is a crypto asset."

Ethereum's share of the collateral

Almost 70% of RWA deposits sit on lending venues built on Ethereum. Plasma has emerged as the second-largest, supported by Aave's expansion beyond Ethereum, while Solana's growth has “largely been driven” by native RWA lending platform Kamino. Deposits stay concentrated on Aave, Morpho and Kamino.

That activity has yet to reach venue revenues. Application revenues fell across both lending and trading platforms over the year, in what the report calls an early stage of adoption. Hyperliquid is the exception, generating “substantially more application revenue” than any other trading or lending venue and overtaking Solana and Ethereum as the top revenue-generating chain. Decrypt reported in July that real-world assets had outpaced crypto on Hyperliquid for the first time in a single week, with chipmaker SK Hynix the most-traded stock.

BlackRock Launches Tokenized Money Market Funds on Solana, Ethereum

The split is not new. In February, tokenized real-world assets had grown 8.7% in a month to $24.8 billion as DeFi's total value locked fell 25% to $94.8 billion, a rotation 1inch co-founder Sergej Kunz put down to compressed DeFi yields against about 4% on tokenized Treasuries. BlackRock, whose BUIDL fund is among those named in the report, launched two more tokenized money market funds on Monday, swiftly followed by the launch of tokenized share classes for European money market funds holding a combined $311 billion.

Scale remains modest. Around $2.2 billion of a global equity market worth more than $100 trillion has been tokenized, a position the report likens to stablecoins in 2019. The analysis covers distributed assets only—those that can be moved to wallets outside the issuing platform—placing networks such as Canton and Provenance outside its scope.

China’s Kimi K3 Broke Out of Its Sandbox to Look Up Test Answers

Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 left the sandbox it was being tested in and went onto the open internet to find answers to problems it had been set, according to security firm Frontier Security.

The model was being assessed on defensive cybersecurity skills and was expressly tasked with solving problems without looking them up. It did not attempt the task at all, Frontier said. Instead it probed the network, established that DNS resolution for github.com was working, cloned the official benchmark repository and read the solution off the disk.

China’s Kimi K3 Is Out—And Beats Claude Fable and GPT 5.6 Sol on Key Benchmarks

Frontier calls this “specification gaming via network egress leaks,” noting sandboxes built on frameworks such as the AI Security Institute's Inspect block incoming traffic while leaving outbound HTTPS and DNS ports open. Capable agents inspect their own shell environment on startup as a matter of routine, and a model that finds github.com reachable can pull reference solutions with standard command-line tools.

A misconfiguration made that possible, as it did in recent incidents disclosed by OpenAI and Anthropic. "We found a leak in the sandbox," CEO Yaron Singer told WIRED. "But we also found that Kimi took advantage of that loophole."

Researcher Paul Kassianik told WIRED the model is "very good at following a goal by any means necessary" and lacks the guardrails that would stop it cheating or escaping. Moonshot did not respond to the publication’s request for comment.

AI agents breaking containment

Where the Anthropic and OpenAI models that broke containment were caught in internal evaluations, one of them unreleased, and the versions that targeted real people in UK government testing had their cyber classifiers deliberately switched off, Kimi K3 is openly downloadable, and Frontier tested it with the safeguards an ordinary user would get. That availability, the firm wrote, puts the same behaviour within reach of adversarial actors and makes the incident potentially more harmful.

Kimi K3 also did no damage. It did not attack anything once outside, because it did not need to. OpenAI's model hacked Hugging Face and four other services to reach benchmark answers, while Kimi found its answers in a public repository.

The sandbox Frontier used was built on the UK AI Security Institute's evaluation framework. AISI disclosed this week that agents in its own cyber testing had gone onto the live internet and targeted real people—a separate incident, involving Anthropic and OpenAI models with their safeguards disabled. Its report published Tuesday notes that AISI is now scanning historic evaluation runs for similar behaviour, and that Kimi K3 is among the models under review. AISI did not respond to WIRED's request for comment.

Frontier's larger claim is that the benchmarks themselves are compromised. A model that reads the answer off GitHub still passes, so high scores can reflect a leaky environment rather than genuine reasoning. And if one capable model found the shortcut, the firm argues, others handed shell access could be taking it too, which would inflate results across the field rather than for Kimi alone.

Models optimize for the objective function, Frontier wrote, not for the “human intent behind the benchmark,” adding that where a network path to the solution exists “a sufficiently capable agent will find it.”

A general problem

Matt Fredrikson, CEO of Gray Swan and an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon, told WIRED the behaviour is unremarkable. Give a model an objective without explicit walls around it, he said, and "it'll find a way to get the answer." He described it as a cautionary tale for anyone running models as agents in tools such as OpenClaw.

Kimi K3 Just Triggered DeepSeek Flashbacks for the Stock Market

Frontier's researchers make the same point from the other direction: the capability that lets Kimi find its way out also makes open-weight models strong defensive tools. Their own benchmarks rate Kimi highly at finding vulnerabilities in software and networks, and Hugging Face used an unnamed Chinese model to defend itself during the OpenAI incident.

Released in July, Kimi K3 is the largest open-source model yet published and rattled markets on comparisons to DeepSeek's debut.

🦊 MetaMask Hands AI Agents a Wallet, With Guardrails and a “Beast Mode”

MetaMask launched Agent Wallet on Thursday, a self-custodial wallet that lets AI agents trade crypto on their own, within limits the user sets.

The pitch is autonomy without handing over the keys: an agent can run swaps, perps, prediction-market bets, and staking across Ethereum-compatible chains and Hyperliquid, but only after users have:

capped its spending
allowlisted the protocols it can touch, and
picked a risk setting.

There are two modes users can choose from, the cautious “Guard Mode” and a fully-let-it-rip “Beast Mode.”

Guard Mode (default): Users pre-approve the protocols and addresses the agent can touch, and anything outside those rules, or above the spending limit, pauses for 2FA sign-off before it executes
Beast Mode: Drops the allowlist so the agent trades freely with no approval prompts, relying on real-time threat scanning as the only tripwire, though user spending caps and a malicious-transaction 2FA backstop still apply

Every transaction runs through simulation, threat scanning, and MEV protection, and eligible trades get up to $10,000 a month in loss coverage. It plugs into the AI tools developers already use, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and OpenClaw, and it handles gas for you, settling fees in whatever token is being moved so an agent never needs to hold a chain’s native coin. There’s no token attached.

To be clear, MetaMask isn’t first here. Coinbase shipped agentic wallets in February and MoonPay’s been building since spring. But MetaMask is the biggest, with roughly a quarter of the wallet market. Consensys and founder Joe Lubin are clearly betting that the next wave of onchain activity won’t be driven by humans at all. Whether traders actually hand real money to autonomous software is the open question, and how soon comfort and trust can be built.

My gut read? We are still 1+ years out. But we are getting closer. And it makes sense to build the infrastructure now, because agentic trading is definitely the future.

MyTrade Founder Fined $10K Over Bots That Wash Traded 60 Cryptocurrencies

The founder of crypto market maker MyTrade has avoided prison and been fined $10,000 for running a wash trading service that generated millions of dollars in fake daily volume across roughly 60 cryptocurrencies.

Liu Zhou, 41, a Canadian citizen and Chinese national, was sentenced in Boston federal court on Thursday by U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley, who imposed no custodial term, Law360 reported. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit market manipulation and wire fraud after being charged in October 2024 alongside 17 other individuals and entities.

MyTrade sold the service openly. Clients logged into a dashboard on the MyTrade MM website and specified how many wash trades they wanted executed each day on named exchanges, a product the firm called "Volume Support." Bots did the rest, buying and selling the same asset repeatedly to inflate apparent volume. As of October 2024 the service had dozens of clients.

Zhou was candid with people he believed were prospective customers. MyTrade MM "does self-trades — a buy and a sell in the same second," he told them, and its volume bot could be used to run pump and dumps. The point, he said, was to draw in "other buyers from the community, people you don't know about or don't care about," because "we have to make [the other buyers] lose money in order to make profit."

The FBI built its own token

Investigators created NexFundAI, a fictitious crypto company complete with a website and an Ethereum-based token that traded on Uniswap until law enforcement disabled it, then used it to solicit market-making services and record what was offered.

The sting produced charges against 18 individuals and entities in October 2024, including market makers Gotbit, ZM Quant and CLS Global.

The chamber leaves Friday and returns in mid-September for a few weeks before attention shifts to November's elections, making that window the last realistic one this year. A source familiar with the matter told The Block that Senate Democrats were reluctant to vote ahead of the midterms given the crypto industry's growing political influence, and that the delay buys time to assemble the 60 votes needed.

That math has not changed since the bill cleared the Senate Banking Committee 15-9 in May, when only two Democrats crossed, Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD). Roughly six are needed on the floor. Republican support has also wavered. Should the bill clear the Senate, it would return to the House for another vote before reaching President Donald Trump.

Ethics remains the roadblock

The sticking points are the same ones that have dogged the bill all year: stablecoin rewards, whether the bill arms law enforcement adequately against illicit finance, and above all the ethics provisions covering Trump's own crypto holdings.

Those provisions could pay him. An addendum negotiated by Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Gallego, still unreleased and being worked out with the White House, would require the president to divest from crypto-related businesses. Forced divestiture would also let him defer federal capital gains tax on those holdings, potentially for years, Bloomberg reported, and if he held the replacement investments until death the gains would escape tax entirely.

Trump reported $1.4 billion in crypto and meme coin earnings for 2025, and holds a 38% stake in World Liberty Financial through an affiliated company. Without deferral he would face a 20% rate. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have both used the same provision on their own divestments.

The addendum would also let state attorneys general sue to enforce the ethics measures where the Justice Department declines to. Whether Trump accepts it is unresolved.

Decrypt reported two weeks ago that the bill was on the ropes, with Thune already signalling it would not clear the chamber before the break. Galaxy Research cut its odds of passage this year to a coin toss in June.

SEC Ready to Provide Crypto Rules if Clarity Act Flounders: Chair Atkins

Industry groups struck a determined tone, with Crypto Council for Innovation CEO Ji Hun Kim noting the postponement was disappointing but the direction unchanged. Every day without a framework "pushes American users and builders offshore and leaves consumers at risk," Kim said in a statement.

There is a fallback should the Clarity Act falter. SEC Chair Paul Atkins said last month the agency is ready to write crypto rules itself if the legislation stalls, an outcome the industry has resisted because regulation by rulemaking can be undone by the next administration.

SEC Bought a Billion Airline Records to Track Travelers—Likely Without a Warrant

The Securities and Exchange Commission bought access to a worldwide airline ticketing database holding more than one billion records, according to SEC documents obtained by 404 Media through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The data came from Airlines Reporting Corporation, a clearinghouse co-owned by American, Delta, and United that sits between carriers and travel agencies, and resold bookings made through sites like Expedia and Kayak.

The records held passengers' names, the credit cards used to buy tickets, departure and arrival cities, and flight numbers. More than that, the SEC's subscription included an alert system that checked new bookings against a list of people it was monitoring, flagging travel from the prior 24 hours, with the agency requesting between one and 25 of these alerts a day.

No court order was needed; the government simply bought the data, likely without a warrant.

The SEC is a financial regulator, not a spy agency. Its job is to protect American consumers from insider trading, fraud, and market manipulation. But the same travel and payment trail it purchased is exactly the one crypto holders leave behind: a credit card tied to an exchange account, a flight to a conference, a border crossing. When the state can watch both the chain and the boarding pass, the line between market cop and surveillance arm gets thin.

A year into the second Donald Trump presidency, the SEC has pulled back from major crypto enforcement while the data-broker workaround lets agencies skip the warrant they'd need if they demanded the records directly.

The IRS has been expanding its own surveillance of crypto investors through the same playbook. The SEC’s Coinbase probe of a year ago showed the same appetite for user data. The question is less whether the SEC wants the information than how it gets it.

The loophole, again

Critics call it the data broker loophole: buy what you can't subpoena. ARC's Travel Intelligence Program sold the same post-9/11 surveillance infrastructure to the FBI, IRS, and Homeland Security before pressure from lawmakers forced its shutdown in 2025.

The newly released documents show its reach was wider than known—foreign-to-foreign journeys sat in the system alongside domestic ones.

ARC defended the program. The company told 404 Media that TIP "was established after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks" and "has likely contributed to the prevention and apprehension of criminals involved in... money laundering" and terrorism. Money laundering is the charge crypto draws most often.

Tokyo Tells Trump to Stop Meme-ing Mario

Japanese officials have repeatedly asked the U.S. government to stop its meme posting involving Mario, Pokémon, and Naruto. Since March, the foreign ministry has called out Washington over the unauthorized use of anime and game IP in the Donald Trump administration's social media, according to local reports.

Per reports, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told a parliamentary session in April that "it's inappropriate even for public institutions to reproduce copyrighted materials without the rightsholders' consent," referencing a pro-war video that used Nintendo's Wii Sports.

In June, Cabinet Minister Kimi Onoda said the same principle had been conveyed to the U.S. through diplomatic channels "multiple times." According to Mainichi, Tokyo asked the administration to weigh the potential damage to these IPs when used without permission in policy and pro-war content.

The posts that started it

The administration's accounts have leaned on Japanese franchises for over a year.

In September 2025, Homeland Security posted a mash-up of Pokémon's Ash Ketchum and ICE raid footage set to the theme song. The Pokémon Company later said permission was never sought. In March, the White House X account posted Wii Sports footage cut with Iran strike footage, then a second pro-war clip weaving in Halo, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Dragon Ball, Top Gun, Iron Man, and Braveheart. Master Chief voice actor Steve Downes and Yu-Gi-Oh!'s official account pushed back.

The backlash isn't only official. Fan Nana Suzuki launched a "Protect Japanese Manga" petition on Change.org urging for measures to stop this. Anger flared again in June after President Trump shared an AI-generated video of himself as Naruto on Truth Social. Suzuki reopened the petition "as an urgent effort to convey our protest," and the clip prompted fresh questioning of Onoda on June 12.
